Subdivision Mixture
Reading exercises mixing the two one-beat rhythms — “1 & a” (eighth + two sixteenths) and “1 e &” (two sixteenths + eighth) — with practice versions that subdivide every beat into eighths and sixteenths, plus familiar melodies to encourage audiation.
How to practice this
Read the explanations carefully, then practice the exercises with a metronome at 60bpm, beat one accent turned on, and subdivision set to sixteenth notes. Once those are comfortable, try them with the metronome set to eighth-note subdivision, and finally with no subdivision. Play each exercise at least four times before moving on, then work your way up 5–10bpm at a time to challenge yourself. The melodies at the end are for audiation — play the rhythm of the words on a single surface, and hear them as music.
