Drumset exercise
Bass Drum Eighth Note Partials
Shift the bass drum across every eighth-note partial against a static hand pattern — coordination and ear training in one.
How to practice this
This exercise procedurally shifts the bass drum against a static hand pattern. The bass drum is put onto each of the possible eighth note partials.
Practice this slowly, and think of this as an ear training exercise as much as anything else. Get used to how these different placements feel and sound.
Once you are comfortable, try adding some ghost notes. Practice playing the crash on one. Make phrases: you can try for 3 measures of a given pattern, and one measure of an improvised fill. Finally, try to keep the hand pattern static while you improvise melodically with the bass drum, using these patterns as inspiration.
